Philip is located in Haakon County, on the Western South Dakota prairie, within driving distance to famous tourist attractions such as Mount Rushmore, Custer National Park, and Badlands National Park.
In 2007 Philip celebrated its 100th birthday, paying homage to the pioneers that endured to build this thriving town. Some of the history of Philip includes:
James (Scotty) Philip - The town's namesake - the man who saved the buffalo from extinction
Haakon County - Named in 1905 after King Haakon VII of Norway. Many of the pioneers in the area were of Scandinavian descent.
